30 Days of Crochet: Day 24!

Day 24: Have you ever made your own pattern or dyed your own yarn? How did it turn out?

I have made adjustments to patterns (when they don’t seem to work), but I have not made my own pattern. As for the dyeing yarn part- I have helped my grandmother with the process of dyeing fibers (like picking it), but I have not fully dyed my own yet. I might try that some day. i don’t know. I would like to try cherry juice as a dye. I think that it’d be pretty. My sister has tried watermelon juice and mint leaves and those were rather light but pretty.

Oh wait….I do have an idea for a pattern, but I drew a rough sketch of it so it’s not really a pattern yet. I will make it and then perhaps make it a pattern for people (if they want it).

30 Days of Crochet: Day 23!

Day 23: If you had the supplies (and patience) for it, what project would you start today?

Hmm………….Well,  I am currently on my second afghan in a row……..So I do have the patience. Probably more amigurumi. I would buy those little eyes since I think that they look hella creepy with sewn on eyes. I want to make a couple hundred of the toys (like dogs, bears, and rabbits) and donate them to children’s hospitals around Christmas. Or I would donate them to shelters for abuse victims. I mean, what kid wouldn’t want a new toy? I’d also make a lot of pet toys and donate them to animal shelters. I’m a huge animal lover so it’d be wrong of me if I didn’t do that. It’s why my family is trying to get me to be a vet (which I am considering)….It’s just my love of animals and how much they like me. The only thing I couldn’t do was make catnip toys because I found out that I’m allergic to catnip.

That’s really it. Now to make a chocolate shake and organize my stuff for our French class meetup………….

30 Days of Crochet: Day 22!

Already Day 22?! Oh my jeepers. I have to finish 80 more granny squares for the afghan still…… 😛

Day 22: Have you ever stricken someone off your to-crochet-for list because they didn’t appreciate/ take care of your last crocheted gift to them?

No, but I have done that to people who assume that I’m going to make them stuff just because I can crochet. I have a guy friend who said to me, “Well, since you can crochet I guess that you’re gonna make me a hat, aren’t you?” I said, “You have money, go buy one for yourself. Or make your own.” I will do things for charity, like I want to make a bunch of stuffed animals for this abuse victims shelter, but I won’t make it for people who think that they’re “entitled” to receive a gift just because they have known for x-amount of time.

Plus, when I make things for people- they don’t use them. I made (I use to sew) my friend a purse with a panda on it (because she loves pandas) and she was all “Oh, I love it!” and then never used it. There have been a few people who like the gifts, but there the little gifts. Like nail polish, or special drawings. I don’t know.

30 Days of Crochet: Day 21!

I’m going to make this a little quick also because my great-cousins came into town from southern Oregon and we are all resting at the moment and I wanted to get this done. I will do a huge piece maybe tomorrow with my progress on the afghan (even though it’s much more now).

Day 21: Do you crochet gifts for friends and family for the holidays or birthdays?

Since I’ve only been crocheting since March- not really. I mean, I did make the afghan for my step-dad’s birthday and I am working on the one for my brother, but that’s it. For friends….it really, really depends.

Oh, and I did make the gloves for my grandma’s birthday and she really liked them. I’ll show them tomorrow.

30 Days of Crochet: Day 20!

I can’t believe that it is already day 20. It feels like yesterday that I started this and now it’s almost over.

Day 20: Do you crochet in public? Was anyone offended/incredibly happy/curious that you were doing so?

Do I crochet in public? Yes. I generally have a bag with me that has some yarn and I stand there and crochet, especially if I have to stand in line or wait for long periods of time. When I was still in school, I would crochet before class or while I was on the city bus on the way too and from school (since it’s a 45 minute bus ride across town).

Most people thought that I was knitting and then would ask me the difference between knitting and crochet. I generally had my headphones in so it kind of got people to leave me alone. Except for those really annoying creepy guys on the bus who use any excuse just to talk to you. (For example, there was this one time that a middle aged dude starting talking to me and his first words were, “You have really sexy nails.” or another kept asking me if I like unicorns because I was wearing a t-shirt of a winged unicorn shitting cupcakes.)

People usually just leave me alone when I crochet and the only people who would as were my classmates.

30 Days of Crochet: Day 19!

I honestly forgot about this until now. I’ve spent most of my day making my grandma’s birthday gift.

Day 19: Do you watch movies and/or listen to podcasts while crocheting? What are your favorite things to crochet to?

I crochet to television, movies, music, and audio books.

T.V.: Currently: Mad Men, Doctor Who, and Rugrats. I enjoy Netflix for this. Also, Heroes, Tales of the Unexpected, The Night Gallery, and Tales from the Crypt. Oh, and Dancing with the Stars, RuPaul’s Drag Race/ Drag U, and Dance Moms. And a bunch of other t.v. shows. I’ve been watching a lot of television since school ended.

Movies: Disney movies. Personal favorites are Bedknobs and Broomsticks and Who Framed Rodger Rabbit? Other movies: any of the Hannibal Lecter films, action films, dark comedies, Wristcutters: A Love Story……….

Music: Whatever is on my iPod. From Mozart to Big Bang.

Audio books. Currently, Sundays at Tiffany’s. Barely getting into audio books because I read faster than the audio. Now, I would like audio c.d.s for Shakespeare.

I think that’s it. Now to work on my other glove for Grandma.

30 Days of Crochet: Day 17!

Day 17: Have you ever had a project that you loved become ruined? What’s the story behind it?

Going to make this short and sweet: no. I have not had to deal with that sort of pain. I did spend an hour and a half on a toy ball for my dog, Joey and he destroyed it within 20 minutes, but that’s it.

This is really it for today. I have not really spent the weekend doing my crochet so I’m going to do that right now and watch some t.v. show. Probably Rugrats on Netflix because I’m not in the mood for Mad Men or Doctor Who.

30 Days of Crochet: Day 16!

Day 16: Have you ever had a crochet-related injury?

Not a serious one. I did have to wear band-aids on my left hand because I still hadn’t had found a comfortable level of tension. I got a baby blister on my right thumb and left index finger. Otherwise….I can’t think of anything else.

Because this is a rather short post: I finished the puff-stitch gloves! Refer to this for the pattern: http://college-crochet.tumblr.com/post/25664945259/householdarts-supplies-4-50-crochet-hook Not my design. The only thing that I did differently was that I added two more rows of puff stitches because my hands are a twinge long and I did a chain 7 for the thumb. I tried the chain 4 and it hurt, so I had to change it. Even made the buttons (because I don’t have buttons on me at the moment).

Here it is!

Well, here is one. I’ll have to get a picture of both at a later time.
